Several members of AWIS LAVC attend each year, and this year chapter leadership is planning to organize car pools and a chapter retreat for interested members.

Please fill out this survey to indicate your level of interest in WIST and a chapter retreat:  Survey

If there is interest, our Chapter will be having a coordinated AWIS LA-VC Weekend Overnight Get-Away to go along with this event. We will be staying nearby at a to be designated hotel so that we can debrief, network, and socialize following the event. Those attending will be responsible for their own accommodations and arrangements however we will do our best to network those wanting to share room expenses when our survey is ready. Members often carpool too so if you are interested, definitely express your interest by filling out the survey.

Communicating Science to the World:
The Nature and Practices of Science

AWIS LA/VC + Aquarium of the Pacific Workshop

Sunday, April 7th  2013 2 pm

100 Aquarium Way, Long Beach, CA 90802

Effective science communication is sometimes challenging because of differences in understanding (or differences in opinion) of what science is and how it works.  Recognizing and understanding the spectrum of ideas on the nature and practices of science (how we do science/ how science works as an enterprise) can help science communicators like us interpret their own work to the lay public.

Newsletter

AWIS LA-Ventura County is kicking off this year with an exciting idea for our next Newsletter. We would like to highlight recent events in the science community throughout Los Angeles, Ventura Counties (and wider), but we would need your help.
  • In case you know of any recent local science news, please let us know.
  • Did your start-up company or lab get a new grant? We want to know about it!
  • Did your company launch a new drug, device or diagnostic test? We want to hear about it!
  • Did you attend a conference or a talk that you can't stop thinking about? Please, share!
Send us a 1-2 sentence note about these and other events you might deem worthwhile talking about to newsletter@awislavc.org. Alternatively, you can simply send us a link, if available online.

As an example, we have some exciting news to share with you.  A new journal, The Journal of Postdoctoral Research, JPR (http://www.postdocjournal.com/about-us.aspx), is getting set to launch in January 2013. You can read more about it in our  March Newsletter.

Volunteers Needed

Have you been looking for a way to get involved?  The AWIS Los Angeles-Ventura County Chapter is looking for a few volunteers to help us remain connected. If you would like to interact with energetic, know-how women who want to make a difference, this is the opportunity for you! You will expand your network and help other women scientists in their career development. Service in areas related to your profession is also an excellent way to promote yourself in your resumes and C.V.

Position – E-mail Coordinator

The duties would involve managing the Chapter communication e-mails as needed per Chapter Officers requests, and maintaining the e-mail list of the Chapter active members.

Position – Monthly Coffee Club Coordinator

The duties would involve acting as a contact person for interested attendees, reporting attendance to the chapter, and advertising the get together in your area.  The coffee clubs are relaxed opportunities for our members in a particular geographic area to network and discuss any topic of interest.

Interested volunteers should contact president@awislavc.org.

Outreach Programs

AWIS LA-Ventura County Outreach Program is designed for groups of 2-3 women in science to give a 45 min interactive Powerpoint presentation to middle and high school students on how/why they became interested in science, the importance of science, how to get involved at a young age, and a short description of their research (at a very basic level). To find out more about this exciting initiative and to review opportunities in which you may serve, please visit our Outreach Program link.

Contact president@awislavc.org if interested in volunteering or learning more.

Interested in Outreach Opportunities? Please take a minute to fill out our Outreach Survey, to indicate your interest to speak to junior high or high school students and give suggestions on new schools to contact. We're always looking for new ideas and ways to reach the next generation of scientists!

The Southern California Science Community

The Southern California Region is rich in activities. There are many opportunities that our members are interested in and in which we may be participating. We'll aggregate these opportunities in this section of our AWIS LA-VC web page & summarize them at the bottom of our front page. Please note that postings in this section are not sponsored or affiliated with AWIS LA-VC and are for informational purposes only.
