3/6/10: Brighter Horizons outreach opportunity

posted Nov 2, 2009 8:40 PM by Sophia Tsai   [ updated Feb 15, 2010 11:05 AM ]

We have an exciting outreach opportunity for you to be a part of on March 6, 2010 from 8am-12pm at Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks.  Every two years the Thousand Oaks chapter of AAUW puts on a half day Brighter Horizons Science Workshop Day for 5th -9th graders. The event targets girls at the critical 5th -9th grade level. The goal is to give students hands on workshops that motivate them to excel in science, math and technology.  There are three ways you can be a part of this worthwhile outreach day:

(1)  Be a workshop leader.  Examples from the 2008 event are attached as well as the application to be a workshop leader, which is due December 1, 2010.  If you would like to be a workshop leader, but do not have the time or want to plan your own workshop there are some pre-planned workshops that could be provided to you if you are willing to present.  If you have any questions please contact Peg De Rose at pegderose@yahoo.com or at 805-492-1123.

(2)  Volunteer as a hostess.  You will be paired up with a workshop leader to assist them with various tasks from unloading their cars to getting supplies they may need to assisting them with their workshop.  If you would like to volunteer as a hostess or have more questions, please let Tracy Blois know at tracym@chem.ucla.edu or at 619.277.2059.

(3)  Be a part of an AWIS science careers panel.  We'd like to have a few AWIS volunteers to form a career panel and discuss different career options for girls to pursue in science, math and technology.  Please let Tracy Blois know by mid-November at tracym@chem.ucla.edu or at 619.277.2059 if you can help here so we can form the panel and submit an application by the Dec. 1 deadline.

Alternatively, for those of you who do not want to travel to Thousand Oaks, there will also be outreach opportunities at a Girls' Science Day in Pasadena also on March 6, 2010.  More details on that to follow.

We look forward to you joining us in 2010 for some community outreach!
