AWIS LA/VC members and their guests met up with TreePeople for a guided hour-long evening hike. Those attending were allowed to choose for different energy levels and themes geared to the young and not-as-young alike for a low cost ($5). Those interested met early for a light picnic before the hike and wore green to distinguish themselves as AWIS affliated.
Beautiful views and a chance to get out of the lab/ office? What more could AWIS members ask for? Our hike of the SolsticeCanyon Loop outside of Malibu, CA was a 3-mile (roundtrip) trek starting off on the Rising Sun Trail with spectacular ocean views. The trail leaded us past the Tropical Terrace, ruins of a home built in the 1960's that was later destroyed by a fire. Tropical Terrace is covered in exotic plants and stunning pools, and if that wasn't enough to entice you, the hike also took the group by a 30 ft. waterfall! Guests packed a picnic lunch for a relaxing end to our hike.
AWIS members and their guests met up for one of Griffith Observatory's famous star parties with views of the the heavens and the beautiful LA cityscape at night!
"Free public star parties are held monthly with the assistance of the Los Angeles Astronomical Society and the Los Angeles Sidewalk Astronomers at the GriffithObservatory. They are a chance for the whole family to look at the sun, moon, visible planets, and other objects, to try out a variety of telescopes, and to talk to knowledgeable amateur astronomers about the sky and their equipment."
