Walk to Wellness
Wednesday, May 24th

AWIS LA/VC partnered with the Amgen Women’s Interactive Network (AWIN) and Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association (HBA) at Amgen’s 10th annual Walk for Wellness event on May 24th. Hosted at Amgen’s headquarters in Thousand Oaks, Amgen staff and their spouses/domestic partners were encouraged to take part to raise awareness for increasing physical activity both in and outside the workplace. The outdoor layout of the event enabled participants to meet their goal of achieving 10,000 steps per day to promote wellness. Participants also had the opportunity to connect with the many different company-wide organizations and vendors to learn more about their mission and how to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Saturday, April 29th

AWIS recently partnered with GQR, an international executive search firm specializing in the Life Sciences, Energy & Engineering, Information Technology and Banking & Finance, for an afternoon of career coaching and headshots. GQR’s CEO, Steven Talbot; Senior Vice President, Trevor Symons; and Associate Vice President, Seth Almaraz discussed how to successfully market yourself on social media, prepare for an interview and negotiate your salary. The presentation was followed by a round table discussion and networking hour, where members of the AWIS LAVC community had their headshot taken by a professional photographer – Kate Fehlhaber – to enhance their social media presence; a wonderful career development opportunity!

The Women in Science and Technology conference is a one-day symposium focusing on career and personal development as well peer networking. The conference offers inspiring and prominent keynote speakers, exciting and informative workshops, round-tables and seminars for individuals at all stages of their careers in both academia and industry, an excellent opportunity to network, develop new skills, and explore career opportunities.

Inventathon
March 4th - 5th

Inventathon is a 36-hour healthcare hackathon focused on the disruption of current healthcare technologies where multidisciplinary teams of students, postdoctoral researchers, engineers, and clinicians will seek to create software and hardware prototypes to solve unmet medical needs in the field of digital health. The end product can be an app, device, website, conceptual drawing, or anything else that exemplifies the concept. This year’s hackathon focuses on the exploration of opportunities to use Artificial Intelligence and/or Automation and related technologies to improve healthcare.

Broad Museum Visit

Join AWIS for a morning at the museum! The Broad is a new contemporary art museum founded by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles. The museum is designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler and is home to the 2,000 works of art in the Broad collection, which is among the most prominent holdings of postwar and contemporary art worldwide.

2016 Brighter Horizons Math, Science and Technology Conference
Saturday, March 12th

Brighter Horizons is presented by the AAUW (formerly American Association of University Women) Thousand Oak and Simi Valley Branches in cooperation with Camarillo and Ventura County Branches and in partnership with the City of Thousand Oaks and California Lutheran University.

Brighter Horizons Conference nurtures students’ interests in math and science related subjects to encourage them to consider careers in technological fields. Students in 5th to 9th grades are invited to choose 3 different workshops each led by a woman who is a professional working in the subject field. Workshops include hands-on activities that demonstrate tasks related to the subject and that, hopefully, spark an interest in the student. Workshop topics have included Forensic Sciences, Entomology (study of insects), Astronomy, Veterinary Medicine, Chemistry and Biochemistry for example.

This panel series featured industry experts sharing career advice from various stages of the pharmaceutical development process, from early discovery and process development to clinical research, regulatory and marketing. The goal of each panel is to provide our audience with an understanding of the drug development process, the roles and responsibilities of the functions involved and offer advice from industry experts on what it takes to be successful in these roles.

We launched the first session of a two-part series – 'Work-Life Seminar: A panel discussion about how to maintain a healthy balance in Academia and Industry'. The panelists for the first seminar series were:

Lynn Gordon, Professor of Ophthalmology and Associate Dean for Academic Diversity at the David Geffen School of Medicine (UCLA)

Erin Sanders, Director of the Center for Education Innovation in Life Sciences (CEILS) and Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics (MIMG).

The panelists were asked to describe how they became involved in science, how they transitioned to their current role (triumphs and challenges), and most importantly, how they balance work (career and ambitions) with their lifestyles (family, leisure and health).
